Students
Intercambio offers affordable and flexible group or individualized English classes to nonnative English speakers throughout Boulder County. These classes are taught by trained volunteers at either public facility; partner agency or the students’ home.
School–based classes are scheduled at night during the week (Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30–8:00pm at Boulder High and Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30–8:00pm at Angevine in Lafayette). There are four 9–week terms each year.
Our home classes are scheduled at a time and place that is convenient for both the student and teacher. All our classes focus on teaching life skills and how to thrive in the community. Each term students take class field trips to places like the library, bank and supermarket, to increase practical communication skills and resource awareness.
Cost: $20 to register and $15 for books. Scholarships are available. Cost to continue each additional 9–week term is $10.
Volunteers
Volunteer teachers receive comprehensive training to help immigrants learn English, while gaining exposure and understanding of other cultures. It is this ‘Intercambio’, which allows both groups to form intercultural relationships and friendships, a goal shared by teachers and students alike. Each volunteer must go through a 6–12 hour teacher training depending on whether they teach at a home or at a school. Additional teacher trainings are offered throughout the year on topics such as grammar, pronunciation and cultural understanding.
