Expanding the Intercambio model
Intercambio is now providing its effective materials on a "silver platter" to individuals and organizations that wish to start or improve a nonprofit or faith-based ESL program using volunteers. Programs are sprouting up across the country to meet increased demand for ESL classes, but many lack the infrastructure and materials to become sustainable. Intercambio offers its trainings, curriculum, assessments, evaluations and database in a user-friendly way that is allowing other programs to flourish without reinventing wheels. Intercambio has shared its model with organizations in:
- Steamboat Springs, CO (Comunidad Integrada)
- Denver, CO (Temple Sinai Program and Intercambio Denver)
- Boise, ID (Community College Western Idaho)
- Littleton, CO (Immigrant resource Center)
- Antwerp, Belgium
- Moab, UT (Multicultural Center)
- Los Cabos, Mexico (Teacher Training Center)
- Tufts University
- Northeastern University
- Greeley, CO (Realizing Our Community)

"Intercambio has been very helpful to the improvement of our volunteer ESL program for Tufts custodians. The books allowed us to create curricula suited for different levels of proficiency, thus allowing our teachers to teach what is appropriate for every student. In addition, the training provided to us has been invaluable in making sure all our teachers know how to approach certain topics, how to present themselves in front of their students and how to approach ESL instruction in general. This training gives us confidence that volunteers who may not have had a lot of teaching experience are prepared and are well-equipped with the right skills."
Griselle Ong, ESL for ABM Co-Coordinator at Tufts University
"The Temple Sinai English Language Acquisition Program (ELAP) was created in November, 2007, to provide free English instruction to immigrants in our community. As an all-volunteer program, we began very small and grew to serving as many as 85 students every week. For the past two years we have been using the Intercambio curriculum. The students have a sense of accomplishment when they have completed a book and are ready to progress onto the next level, and teachers have confidence that the curriculum provides the scope and sequence necessary to effectively teach the students the language skills they need. In addition, the curriculum teaches the cultural skills the students need to fully integrate into American society.
Our relationship with Intercambio extends beyond the purchase of books. They have been an invaluable resource, helping us with teacher training, the development of better assessment tools, and overall moral support in creating a sustainable program that serves the needs of our students and is responsive to our teachers."
Linda Stein, Founder, Temple Sinai English Language Acquisition Program, Denver
"Intercambio's model creates lasting friendships between teachers and students that help immigrants, including refugees, not only learn English, but thrive in their new communities."
Christina McAlpin, former Intercambio volunteer who brought the Intercambio model to Boise, ID
